Community Times: A new era of Community with Web3
Hello, there Community Rockstar 👋
We hope you had a productive month and are staying healthy both physically and mentally. It’s important to take short breaks, give yourself some time, burnouts are real.
In the community news, we hosted Richard Millington in the 5th episode of “Chronicles of Community Builders” with a great host Varu Dwarak, and also our monthly ritual, everyone’s favorite “When RETRO Meets METRO”.
On the other hand, a lot more new community builders have joined our community. Join us at Community Folks to get to know them and listen to their experiences.
We are here to keep you updated on all things community, the events that are being hosted, the jobs that are open.
So, scroll down to see the complete picture.
Let’s goooooooooooo!
(p.s. if you have a question/query that you want fellow community builders’ perspective on? You can ask here or contact us at akash@communityfolks.com)
What is Web 3.0
Web 3 refers to an internet built upon decentralized networks, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. The key innovation of these networks is the creation of platforms that no single entity controls, yet everyone can still trust. (READ-WRITE-OWN)
What is Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs)
DAOs are communities/organizations organized around a shared set of rules enforced on the blockchain through a smart contract. Once the contract is live on the network, no one can change the rules except by a vote. The ethos behind DAOs is to enable collective decision-making, guard railing against hierarchical organization structures. A popular analogy is that DAOs are modern-day, tech-enabled coops.
DAO members are not only participants but also owners of the DAO. Members are given tokens that grant them equity ownership in the DAO, as well as voting power in on-chain governance decisions.
Already, many types of DAOs exist for different purposes:
Protocol DAO: Networks issue a token, allowing community members to govern the protocol
Grant DAO: Communities donate funds and use a DAO to vote on how capital is allocated to various contributors
Social DAO: exactly what it sounds like, good vibes only
Investment DAO: Investment DAOs allow members to pool capital and invest in projects at their earliest stages
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs)
NFT stands for non-fungible token, meaning unique and not interchangeable. They can only have one official owner at a time and they're secured by the Ethereum blockchain – no one can modify the record of ownership or copy/paste a new NFT into existence.
NFTs are tokens that we can use to represent ownership of unique items –art, collectibles, real estate, etc. As everything becomes more digital, NFTs replicate the properties of physical items like scarcity, uniqueness, and proof of ownership.
